I’ve only been at the game of golf a few weeks and I needed help getting up to speed fast. Consequently, I began looking for resources that I could use and came across a little book called Even Par: How Golf Helps Women Gain the Upper Hand in Business. The authors, Leslie Andrews and Adrienne Wax, have had impressive business careers and bring a lot of golfing expertise to this piece of work. Although the book is really geared toward businesswomen, I think it brings tremendous value to any woman wanting to learn about the game.

Why I Like The Book

The book has 10 chapters, but can really be broken into three distinctive sections: 1) why you, as a woman, should play golf, 2) how to get started playing golf, and 3) quick-start must-knows to be successful on your first outing. The language is written for businesswomen who have never played golf before so it is easy to follow and easy to understand. It is full of anecdotes that are encouraging, funny, and on-point with the topic.

Some points that I found particularly interesting is how impactful playing golf can be on advancing a career. Andrews and Wax give quite a few statistics on how the game has impacted a golf players’ income, and argue that golf is an integral component to the “game” of corporate America. Playing golf opens doors and allows for opportunities that no other activity, outside of the office, can offer. The authors go so far as to suggest that you display a picture of you and your friends golfing as a way to begin conversations about golf.

Want To Play A Round?

Another interesting topic they cover is when to accept invitations to play with others. The authors are very clear that you don’t have to be Lexi Thompson (my analogy) to play in a group. You do have to know some basic rules of golf, and how to handle yourself on the golf course. These details are clearly outlined for you so that you can be successful and play your first game feeling as if you “belong” on the golf course. One particular passage I found hilarious is how men deal with first-tee jitters versus how women deal with this phenomenon. Understanding the various mental approaches to the game is important, regardless of who you are playing with at the time. Handle these situations with grace and professionalism, and you are on the right road to playing golf well.

Other golden-nuggets of information that can be found in this book include how to choose a Golf Pro to take lessons, what equipment you will need, and how to dress. This book has a plethora of information that I found very helpful in my quest to learn the game, and to feel more confident on the golf course. I would highly recommend it to anyone, male or female, who is just starting out and wants a good place from which to learn some basics.
