Inspirational Quotes

“Golf is a lot of walking, broken up by disappointment and bad arithmetic.”

“If we walk far enough, we shall some time come to some place.”

Kansas City, Here I Come

Did you know that Walt Disney grew up in Kansas City, and is rumored to have been inspired to create the iconic Mickey when he saw a mouse in his studio? I did not know this.

Did you know there are also more BBQ restaurants in Kansas City per capita than in any other city? Could it be due to an overly large animal population? One wonders, because the original names founders suggested for the city were Possum Trot and Rabbitville.

Homegrown talent includes rapper Eminem, aviator Amelia Earhart, iconic novelist Ernest Hemingway, and fashion designer, Kate Spade. Oh, did I mention the Happy Meal was invented here?

Eh… thanks, Possum Trot.

Before you call for some BBQ and a six-pack of McNuggets, let’s talk golf.

National Golf Club, Parkville, Mo

Armed with a beautiful piece of Missouri property and an eye on the future, developers of The National sought out some big talent before breaking ground. They finally settled on Pro golfer Tom Watson to bring their vision to life. And why not? Watson’s credentials are impeccable. H was named six times PGA Player of the Year, ranked 10th greatest golfer of all time by Golf Digest magazine, inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988, and was a Kansas City native to boot. That sounds like a darn good resume to me.

Established in 2001, this jewel in Kansas City’s crown is located a short drive from the city and situated in the charming suburb of Parksville. Perfect harmony was what Mr. Watson had in mind as he began designing this par 72, 7,034-yard, Midwest oasis.

Careful planning and a delicate touch helped retain the natural contours and organic beauty of the rolling terrain and wooded glens. His dedication to link Feng Shui, the art of using energy forces to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environments, makes this 18-hole championship course not only extremely esthetically pleasing, but a blast to play.

Do enchanting surroundings make your day? Get ready, because spectacular views await you at every hole.

A Test of Mental Fortitude

Golfers of every skill level will find this course both stimulating and inspiring. Featuring a 100-foot drop from the tee to the fairway, hole No. 9 is sure to make you stop and consider your strategy. Still need more? Hole No. 17 is guaranteed to test your pluck with its “Lengthy fairway, hard-to-read green, plus a few hazards along the way.”

The bunkers are precisely edged, and the well-manicured sand traps appear dazzlingly white in the sunshine.

Not to be ignored, the fairways are also fastidiously maintained. Its greens run the gamut from medium to large with a complexity that’s sure to keep you engaged and on your toes. Did we mention fast? Oh, yeah. Complex and fast makes for a lively combination.

Because no course worth its weight scrimps on maintenance, this one is no exception. The enthusiastic golf management team runs a tight ship and has charged the staff with keeping the grounds in impeccable shape. I must say, they have risen to the occasion in spades and continue to give us their personal promise to keep The National pristine for generations to come.

One Of The Finest

One of the finest private clubs in the western portion of Missouri, The National Golf Club of Kansas City is near the top of the heap and for good reason. Beautiful homes frame meticulously maintained greens (a small army of greens keepers gives you an indication of the level of commitment to keeping everything neat, clean, and green), and a staff that is eager to please in every area of the grounds. From restaurants to the fitness center, tennis courts to the pool, they’re ready to serve.

Two last things to consider are whether to become a member or find someone who is a member. How about you make a friend and get yourself invited to play this great course?
